Clear writing, authentic performance
I help journalists become more confident storytellers and be authentic, authoritative and creative.
I worked in newspapers, TV and radio for 20 years as a journalist and then for a further 10 years as a journalist trainer.
As one of the BBC’s senior producers, I led news teams on big international stories. They included the Hong Kong Handover, when I spent 2 years planning coverage and logistics, as well as covering major stories all over Asia. On 9/11, I pulled together an ad hoc team in New York to provide the first 72 hours of breaking news.
At the BBC’s College of Journalism I commissioned, designed and delivered writing and performance coaching for both experienced and inexperienced correspondents and presenters.
I enjoy training face to face, one to one, in groups and over the internet.
My BBC background has given me a passion for training journalists in the ethics and editorial standards required of public service journalism.
I’ve also trained hundreds of newsroom editors in giving feedback on performance.
My clients include the Daily Telegraph, Al Jazeera and BBC Media Action.
“Fiona is a first-rate trainer and coach. She cleverly combines her experience as an executive coach with her abilities as a trainer. This allows her to honestly critique and improve people’s work, while leaving them feeling really good about themselves: a great skill”. Vin Ray, former Director, BBC College of Journalism.
“Fiona’s training was based on the realities of the newsroom and delivered with humour and a real passion for honest communication in the workplace”. Tanya McNulty, RTE News
